This heat is generated by the industrial process and would be lost otherwise. The project is due to be commissioned in the first half of 2018. The investment amounts to \u20ac5.6m, it is borne by Kyotherm and benefits from subsidies from the ADEME (French national Agency for Environment and Energy Management) and from the Occitanie Region.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The waste heat recovery project<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The project involves recovering heat at a temperature of 1,000\u00b0C lost by the ArcelorMittal steel annealing oven, and reusing it for the city district heating network and for the plant needs (process heat and space heating). Heat exchangers, pipes and automation devices will be provided by Schneider Electric to collect up to 4.8 MW of heat. This energy will then be distributed by a 1.2 km long network and will provide for the needs of the equivalent of 1,150 housing units.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7610 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/kyotherm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Didactic-diagram-Saint-Chely.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyotherm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Didactic-diagram-Saint-Chely.png 600w, https:\/\/kyotherm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Didactic-diagram-Saint-Chely-300x251.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The existing oil-fired boilers will also be replaced by a 4 MW high-efficiency natural gas heating plant. In total, the project will allow to improve the carbon footprint of a 17 GWh yearly heat consumption,\u00a0<strong>by reducing the CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions by 4,000 tons per year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Combining three complementary competences in one project<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The operator of the industrial site:\u00a0<strong>ArcelorMittal<\/strong>\u00a0has played an important part in the initiation of this project, which illustrates its efforts and actions towards reducing its carbon footprint all the while renforcing the competitivity of its plant, the largest local industrial employer.<\/li>\n<li>The specialist in energy management and automation:\u00a0<strong>Schneider Electric,\u00a0<\/strong>a longstanding partner of the site, is in charge of the engineering and construction of the installations, with a high added-value in terms of automation, for a smarter management of the supply and offtake of the network.<\/li>\n<li>The energy-efficiency third-party investor:\u00a0<strong>Kyotherm<\/strong>\u00a0(via a dedicated subsidiary) has enabled this highly capitalistic project to see the light by supplying heat to ArcelorMittal on an off-balance-sheet basis at a competitive price.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Arnaud Susplugas, CEO of Kyotherm: <\/strong><em>\u201c The financing of this project by Kyotherm enables ArcelorMittal to recover and use its waste energy all the while keeping its financing capabilities for its industrial core business. Thanks to its long-term vision and to a good integration of the technical considerations, Kyotherm is able to provide heat to ArcelorMittal at a competitive price. This business case which favours use over ownership is particularly relevant for waste heat recovery projects. Indeed, such projects enable considerable savings in terms of operating costs, but they require a significant initial investment. In this context, Kyotherm is a natural financial partner for project developers and heat consumers, and we believe that this type of operation will develop in the years to come.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Philippe Chapus, project manager, ArcelorMittal: <\/strong><em>\u201cEnergy efficiency has always been one of the priorities of the ArcelorMittal site in Saint-Ch\u00e9ly-d\u2019Apcher, which is dedicated to the production of so-called \u201celectrical\u201d steels, which are used in high efficiency electric motors and generators. Waste energy (from industrial furnaces for instance) is captured from our new continuous annealing line. The entire local team promoted and drove this project. It would neither have been possible without a strong involvement of the management of ArcelorMittal and of local authorities, nor without the innovative technical and economic solution brought by Kyotherm and Schneider Electric.
